What to Know for Stoves, Gas, and Electric Fireplaces
Mounting a TV above the fireplace has become a popular design choice in modern homes. It saves space, looks clean and contemporary, and makes the fireplace wall a true focal point. But is it always a good idea?
The short answer: it depends on the type of fireplace you have. Heat, viewing angles, and mounting surfaces all vary between wood-burning stoves, gas fireplaces, and electric fireplaces – and these factors can affect both your TV’s performance and your overall comfort.
Here’s what you need to consider when placing a TV above each type of fireplace.
TV Over a Wood-Burning Stove
Solid fuel stoves produce significant heat—often more than other types of fireplaces—and that heat can rise directly toward a wall-mounted TV. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can damage the screen, affect internal components, and shorten the TV’s lifespan. To reduce the risk of heat-related damage, it’s essential to take protective measures. Installing a heat deflector, such as a mantelpiece or ceramic beam above the stove, can help redirect rising heat away from the television. A minimum clearance of 500mm (about 20 inches) between the top of the stove and the bottom of the TV is recommended. It’s also wise to check the surface temperature at the intended mounting height while the stove is in use—temperatures exceeding 32°C (90°F) may pose a risk. For added peace of mind, always consult your TV manufacturer’s guidelines regarding safe operating temperatures.
TV Over a Gas Fireplace
Open-fronted gas fires are primarily decorative, with most of the heat venting up the chimney. As a result, mounting a TV above them is generally safe, as long as it is placed at least 300mm (about 12 inches) above the fireplace.
In contrast, glass-fronted gas fires are highly efficient and will direct more heat into the room and upwards, requiring similar precautions as those for solid fuel stoves. To protect your TV, it’s essential to install a heat deflector, such as a mantelpiece or shelf. Alternatively, cladding the chimney breast with heat-resistant cement boards and installing the TV within a recessed space offers an added layer of protection.
Always consult both your gas fireplace manufacturer’s clearance guidelines and the TV manufacturer’s recommendations for safe operating temperatures to ensure optimal protection and safety.
TV Over an Electric Fireplace
If you’re aiming to install a TV above your fireplace, an electric fire is the safest and easiest option. Electric fireplaces generate minimal radiant heat, and their heat output is typically directed forward or downwards, rather than upwards toward the TV. This makes them the most TV-friendly choice compared to gas or solid fuel fires. For an added touch of style, consider pairing your electric fireplace with a media wall or built-in shelving to create a seamless, modern entertainment centre.
