With the recent headlines and ongoing debates around wood burning, you may be wondering whether installing or using a wood-burning stove in London is still permitted.

The short answer is: YES, provided the stove meets the relevant requirement and correct fuel is being burned.

London is a smoke-control area, meaning you cannot simply burn wood on any stove or open fire. However, wood can be legally burned where the appliance is Defra approved and the stove is used with kiln dried or properly seasoned logs. In addition to DEFRA regulations, all newly installed stoves must meet the clean burning Ecodesign2022 requirements, which set minimum standards for efficiency and emissions.

The key is compliance, not abandoning wood burning altogether.

Choose the right stove. Have it properly installed and maintained. Burn the correct fuel. And always follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions.

When choosing tiles for a tiled fireplace hearth, there are specific considerations to keep in mind. Particularly if the hearth will sit beneath a wood burning stove, solid fuel appliance, or open fire. Selecting the correct tile material is essential to ensure safety, durability, and long-term performance.

Suitable Tile Types for Fireplace Hearths:

Porcelain Tiles

Porcelain tiles are generally the best overall choice for fireplace hearths and areas exposed to high heat. Their high density and low porosity, created through high-temperature firing, give them excellent strength, durability, and heat resistance.

Quarry Tiles

Quarry tiles are a traditional and time-tested option, particularly well-suited to period or classic fireplace installations. Unglazed and extremely hard-wearing, they offer a matt, slip-resistant finish that performs well in heavy-use hearth applications.

Natural Stone Tiles

Natural stone tiles such as slate, granite, and limestone provide a timeless appearance and good heat tolerance. Granite tiles are particularly durable and well suited to solid fuel appliances. Softer stones, such as limestone tiles, require careful selection and installation due to their porosity. From a practical perspective, limestone is generally more suitable for gas fires, as ash from solid fuel fires can cause staining.

Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic tiles are typically best suited to fireplace surrounds and decorative areas that are not exposed to direct heat. While some ceramic tiles may be suitable for hearth use, they should only be used if they are heat-rated and installed correctly, making them less common beneath stoves or open fires.

Installation Requirements

Tiles must be fixed to a non-combustible backing, such as a concrete sub-hearth, cement backer board, or an approved insulating board. It is essential to use heat-resistant tile adhesive and grout designed for areas exposed to elevated temperatures, ensuring long-term stability and performance.

In many UK installations, a tiled hearth is typically constructed to a minimum thickness of 50mm, unless installed directly onto a concrete sub-hearth. Hearth size and clearances vary depending on the appliance, with building regulations and manufacturer instructions specifying how far the hearth must extend around the firebox or stove to protect surrounding combustible materials.

For further guidance, see our detailed guide here:
https://www.stonewoods.co.uk/home-is-where-the-hearth-is/

Choosing the right tile for a fireplace hearth is not just about aesthetics, safety and durability are paramount. Porcelain, quarry tiles, and suitable natural stone are all excellent options when installed on a non-combustible base using appropriate adhesives and grout. Always follow appliance clearance requirements and check with tile manufacturers to confirm the heat rating of porcelain or ceramic tiles before installation.

When we think about home safety, smoke alarms often get all the attention. However, if your home has a wood burning stove, solid fuel appliance, or gas fire, there is another safety device that is just as important. If not more so: a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm.

Carbon monoxide is often referred to as the silent killer, and for good reason. It is colourless, odourless, and invisible, meaning it cannot be detected without a suitable alarm. Any appliance that burns fuel including gas, wood, coal, or pellets has the potential to produce CO if something goes wrong.

UK building regulations require a CO alarm to be installed for any solid fuel or gas appliance in order for the installation to be HETAS or Gas Safe certified. CO alarms are particularly important in homes with gas fires or gas stoves, as gas does not produce smoke or smell in the same way solid fuel does. With solid fuel, smoke or fumes may provide an early warning that something is wrong, whereas CO from gas appliances can build up unnoticed.

Carbon Monoxide and Solid Fuel Appliances

Carbon monoxide is produced when solid fuels such as wood, coal, or smokeless fuels do not burn completely. When a stove is operating correctly with adequate airflow, combustion should produce mainly carbon dioxide (CO₂). A CO alarm can alert you if one or more of the following issues occurs, allowing action to be taken before safety is compromised:

Incomplete Combustion – CO can build up when there is insufficient oxygen for the fuel to burn properly. This may happen if air vents are closed too far, the stove is run in “slumber” mode for long periods, or the firebox is overloaded.

Blocked or Restricted Chimney or Flue – A clear flue is essential for safely removing combustion gases. Soot, tar, creosote, bird nests, or debris can restrict the flue, causing CO to spill back into the room. This is why regular chimney sweeping is essential.

Poor Chimney Draw – Even a clear chimney can suffer from poor draw, particularly with cold flues at start-up or during adverse weather conditions. Downdraughts can prevent fumes from exiting correctly, leading to smoke and CO entering the room.

Lack of Maintenance – Without routine servicing, air controls may not function correctly and components such as door rope seals can deteriorate, increasing the risk of CO production.

Unsuitable or Wet Fuel – Burning fuel with a high moisture content, such as wet or unseasoned wood, leads to cooler, inefficient combustion and increased CO production. Only approved fuels should be used, and wood should have a moisture content below 20%.

Carbon Monoxide and Gas Appliances

As with solid fuel, carbon monoxide can be produced when gas does not burn completely. In a correctly installed and maintained gas appliance, combustion should produce carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water vapour. A CO alarm will alert you if issues arise, including:

Incomplete Combustion – This can occur if burner ports are blocked or dirty, the air-to-gas ratio is incorrect, or the appliance is faulty or poorly adjusted.

Chimney or Flue Issues – Although gas fires do not produce soot, chimneys and flues still require regular sweeping and smoke testing, ideally once a year. Chimney performance can also be affected by downdraughts which can cause combustion gases and CO to spill back into the room.

Lack of Servicing and Maintenance – Over time, burners can degrade, seals can fail, and heat exchangers can deteriorate. These faults may allow CO to escape into living spaces. Annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer is essential to ensure all safety checks are carried out.

Our Commitment to Safety

At Stonewoods, safety is paramount. We will not complete any stove or gas fire installation without a carbon monoxide alarm in place. The risks of not having one simply are not worth taking, and a CO alarm provides vital protection and peace of mind for you and your family.

Chimney sweeping has played an essential role in British homes for centuries. Closely tied to the rise of fireplaces and solid fuel heating, the profession has evolved from a dangerous necessity into a modern, regulated trade focused on safety, efficiency, and heritage preservation.

The Rise of Chimneys in Britain

Before the Middle Ages, most homes in the UK relied on open hearths with smoke escaping through holes in the roof. This began to change in the 12th and 13th centuries, when chimneys were introduced into larger stone buildings and manor houses. By the Tudor period, chimneys had become more common, particularly in towns and cities.

As fireplaces spread, so did a serious problem: soot buildup. Chimneys needed regular cleaning to prevent sooty blockages and dangerous chimney fires – giving rise to the trade of chimney sweeping.

The Chimney Sweeps of Georgian and Victorian Britain

Chimney sweeping became widespread in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in growing cities like London. Chimneys were narrow, twisting, and often impossible for adults to climb. As a result, children – known as climbing boys, were sadly employed to clean flues by hand.

These children faced extreme hardship, health problems, and dangerous working conditions. Public concern eventually led to reform, including Chimney Sweepers Act 1834 and further legislation in 1840 and 1875 which finally outlawed the use of child chimney sweeps.

This period remains a sobering chapter in the history of the trade and played a key role in shaping modern labour laws in the UK.

The Move to Safer, Modern Techniques

By the late 19th century, technology began to replace dangerous manual methods. Mechanical brushes, rods, and improved flue design made chimney sweeping safer and more effective. At the same time, public awareness grew around the importance of fire prevention and ventilation. As coal fires became standard in British homes, regular chimney maintenance became a normal part of household life.

Chimney Sweeping Today

Today, chimney sweeping in the UK is a skilled and regulated profession. Modern chimney sweeps use specialist brushes and high-powered vacuum systems, alongside smoke testing and essential safety checks. These include CCTV flue inspections, which are particularly important before glass fronted gas fire and stove installations where the chimney must be lined to ensure correct operation.

Regular sweeping helps to

Prevent chimney fires

Electric fires offer a brilliant alternative to traditional fireplaces in homes and commercial properties where having a chimney is not an option. Let’s have a look at the evolution of the flame effect, how the electric fires evolved from the early stages to today’s sophisticated fires with highly realistic flame pictures and features.

The electric fire was invented in 1912. The first electric fires mimicked the appearance of a traditional wood-burning fire using simple methods like coloured light bulbs and mechanical devices. Metal rods or rotating drums painted with flame patterns created basic flickering effects. These effects were rudimentary, with an obvious mechanical look. The focus was more on providing heat than on realistic flame visuals.

By the 1960s, advancements in lighting and materials allowed for more sophisticated effects. Some designs incorporated silk ribbons or reflective elements that fluttered when air was blown over them, imitating the movement of flames. These provided a more dynamic and convincing flame effect, although they were still clearly artificial.

In the 90’s the introduction of halogen lights, fibre optics, and better reflectors allowed for more realistic flame effects. Due to their increasing popularity, companies began to focus on improving the aesthetics of electric.

The use of LEDs in 2010’s revolutionised electric fire flame effects. LED lights, often combined with digital projection and moving screens, enabled a much more realistic and customisable flame effect. Some models even introduced water vapour illuminated by LEDs to create three-dimensional flames. LED electric fires produce highly convincing flames with depth, colour gradients, and movement that closely mimic real fire. They also offer various settings to adjust flame and fuel bed colour, brightness, and speed.

The latest innovations include virtual fireplaces with screens displaying high-definition videos of real flames. Some smart fireplaces integrate with home automation systems, allowing users to control flame effects via apps or voice commands.

These highly realistic electric fires provide a captivating ambience in any interior and are quite often incorporated in media walls as they do not require clearances from combustibles. Visit our Electric fires and Emberlux media wall showroom to discover many options how to elevate your interior.
